Review of Rossi, .38 Special, Model 851, 4in barrel, Blued
The firearm was shipped the same day it was ordered. Two days later arrived at my FFL.
Took the gun home, cleaned it, read the instruction manual and was off to the range. Fired several brands of .38 Special ammo, no plus P (Federal, GECO, American Eagle). Two hundred rounds in all. No issues.
Shoot bench rest at 45 feet. First few shots were off center, 1.5 inches to the left. Made a half turn on the rear sight, then dead center, shot after shot, in single action. In double action, the bullets impacted (within an inch) all around dead center. If I had a firmer grip, they would have all been dead center.
In single action, the trigger pull is about 2 lbs (no take-up / no slack), put your finger on the trigger and just think about pressing it and it fires, great!
Double action is around 8 lbs. Not too bad right out of the box. Will loosen up over time for sure.
Form, fit and function is outstanding. The finish was somewhat dull, even after cleaning it with Hoppe's #9. My gunsmith recommended cleaning the exterior with Flitz metal polish. So I did. Put it on lightly with a Q-tip, one section at a time and let it set for 5 minutes to allow the chemicals to do the work, then wiped it off with a clean cotton towel. It took awhile, but it was worth it. Then I waxed it with Renaissance wax. The bluing shined up great.
You will not find a better value at this price point for a .38 Special revolver. None of the others (at this price point; paid $263.00, with free shipping from CenterfireGuns) have adjustable rear sights, a security locking system or a full solid 2 inch lug (under the barrel). Many will not shoot Plus P as this firearm will.
The rubberized grips are set perfectly. You can hold high on the grip, and pull low on the trigger.
Don’t forget the accessories. I purchased 3 speed loaders, 4 speed strips and an Uncle Mike’s case. Also, picked up 6 snap caps for dry firing.
I had my gunsmith add an accessory rail to the 2 inch solid lug. Now I can attach a light, laser or red dot (using a UM Tactical mount). The gunsmith purchased the rail from Brownells. It is a blued steel tactical rail number 662-000-080 with 3 holes. He drilled, taped, and Loctited it on to the lug. The Rossi looks like it was made with it.
If you or someone are looking for a firearm for target shooting and / or home protection and does not (or cannot) go to the range twice a month to keep proficient with a semi-automatic, then this is the firearm to go with. Period.
Bottom-line: Great firearm, easy and FUN to shoot. Buy one, you will not be disappointed.
